Curly & Cute served with a Cookie
The start of two new commissions, a curly little cute chocolate dog and a lovely fawn staffordshire terrier type, but instead of drawing this second commission as a normal dog portrait she will be drawn in the same style as my dog in a jacket, wearing a leather cut off which suits her owner just perfectly as he and his wife are bikers.
I have started them both, however the little cute curly dog which i've named fudgy due to his/her colour, I have progressed with more as this is required sometime in April and the owners of Cookie would rather me complete the other first so I don't feel pressured and in a rush. I was splitting each piece doing one say Monday, the other Tuesday, and so on, but being able to complete one before the other is better as though I can't speak for other artists, I myself find when I'm working on a piece, I get very focused on that one piece, the only way I can describe is how a cricketer would describe a good game and that is when playing he got his eye in. When I draw I get my eye in on a drawing and the more I work on that piece the more focused I become with that piece and the more I see as I'm drawing or painting with my pastels.
Having these two commissions and another waiting in the wings, has kept me very focused and stopped me from worrying so much about what is happening in the world at the moment with the Covid 19 Virus. I don't really want to discuss this on my website very much as I feel that with all the coverage on tv and radio, people would probably appreciate being able to escape from it when visiting pages like mine, however I would like to say one thing before I drop this subject. To anyone who has been tested positive or who are suffering with the virus, I wish you all the best and hope that you recover quickly and become strong and healthy once more. To the rest of the people, please do take care, I wish you all the best in your futures and hope that you are able to get past this awful illness without any loses in your family or close friendships. I hope that those with a business to run are not affected to the point that you lose your livelihood and your able to keep going throughout the disruption that this virus is causing and come back stronger than you were before. Stay safe everyone and thank you for being here giving me support on my journey from when I started right up to the present day, I can't express how much I appreciate everything you have all done for me.
There, now I've said that, let's move on to something a little more positive, art and creativity!
These two pieces are not only different in style, but they are both drawn on completely different boards too. While Fudgy is drawn on Clairefontaine Pastelmat in Sand colour, Cookie is drawn on Strathmore Bristol Board Vellum medium in white. These two boards couldn't be more different from each other if they tried. Those that use pastels will of I'm sure at sometime or other used pastelmat, for those of you that haven't, it's a thick card and feels almost like sandpaper, that's probably the best way for me to describe it. The bristol board on the other hand is very thick board and the tooth on this board is quite smooth. Because of this you have to be very careful when creating your piece that you don't put down a thick layer of pastel because you will fill the tooth very quickly then struggle to put any further detail on top. Though this can be a pain to someone who after using something like pastelmat, so is used to putting on a good half a dozen layers or more, I actually love using using the bristol board, when putting down the pastel, the detail that I find I can get is just beautiful I and it's just so much nicer working on a smoother service, though it does take some getting used to.
I'll include a picture of both pieces and where they both are at the moment, however Cookie is out of focus as her owners don't want to really see how she's coming along, but want the surprise of seeing the finished the piece first.
I shall post again in a couple of weeks once I've completed Fudgy and have started on Cookie and hopefully also started my next commission which will be a whole new challenge in itself as its something I've never actually done before, but more on that next time.
Stay safe, stay happy, stay loved and be creative
